Comments:
This is the second of three uses of Obverse 2 and the second and final use of Reverse A.

Obverse 2

The photo below shows the Obverse 2 attribution grid.

The only barely notable Obverse 2 die markers are some faint die lines in the denticles opposite stars 5-7, shown in the following photo.

1860 Obverse 2 die lines in denticles

Obverse 2 Die States
  1. Perfect die.
  2. A heavy die line in the gown right of the Y in LIBERTY, apparently die damage, since it doesn't appear on state a.
We've found OC-7 only with die state a.

Reverse A

Reverse A displays no notable die markers. The recesses of the shield are almost completely finished, with just slight unfinished areas at their base.

Reverse A - Almost completely
finished shield recesses

Reverse A Die States
  1. Perfect die.
No later die states have been observed. This is a rare die marriage. We’ve confirmed only five examples, and personally examined only one. We found four examples while reviewing Heritage auction archives. One additional example was sold in a Stacks-Bowers auction in November, 2020. Three of the five examples have unrotated dies. One example exhibits die rotation of approximately 25 degrees CCW. The fifth is rotated over 70 degrees CCW. This example is in a PCGS PR62 holder. The surfaces support the proof attribution, but a very weak strike testifies that it’s actually a very prooflike business strike. This example was purchased by the authors from the 2018 Heritage Central States auction.
